This is an intensive 8 week training programme designed to equip delegates with the essential tools of counselling skills; equipping delegates to be effective in a helping and supportive role. This course will also provide a good foundation or a ‘taster’ course for those thinking of pursuing a career in Counselling or Psychotherapy.
The cost of the course is set at such a rate as to make it assessable to as many as possible.
The course is design to cover three parts that run concurrently and are closely related; counselling skills, counselling theory and personal development.
- Counselling Skills: This encompasses attention giving, structuring, active listening, paraphrasing, reflecting, open ended questioning, and summarising.
- Counselling Theory: The Person Centred Theory Provides the framework to underpin the deployment of skills and the foundation upon which you will develop your skills. This is also informed by Egan’s Three Stage Model
- Personal Development: You will be encouraged to make explicit, explore and examine your learning on the course and the influences that determine your experience of yourself, others and the world in which you live.
Modes of learning:
This will take the form of lectures, class exercises, the use of DVD’s, counselling skill practice sessions, peer and tutor feedback. You will also be expected to keep a learning journal where you will record what you have learnt about yourself; thoughts, feelings, behaviour, values and attitudes. The ethos underpinning this is idea of experiential learning.
All delegates who complete the course will receive a certificate of attendance.

Times: 6.30pm to 8.30pm Wednesday night over 8 weeks

The Trainer for this course is a qualified and British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapist (BACP) accredited Counsellor, who has been a university lecturer for nearly ten years, where she trains psychological therapists from foundation level to Master Degree level students. The Trainer is also a Clinical Supervisor who oversees the clinical work of both trainee and qualified Therapist.
